Last Friday, Metro Boomin pushed himself out of retirement with release of his third studio album, NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES. The producer's project enlists former collaborators like Young Thug, Travis Scott, 21 Savage and world-renown Drake. Metro's ability to craft and sample unique beats to each respective artist is on full display here, as no two tracks can entirely sound too alike.
After a few listens, I believe my favorite tracks are the intro "10AM/Save the World" featuring Gucci Mane and the interlude, "Only 1", and "Overdue", both featuring Travis Scott. In my opinion, these three songs can represent the diversity of the album as a whole. Gucci's track is a softer wake up and welcome into the Metro's world while both of Scott's track have him reminiscing. I strongly recommend listen to the interlude and "Lesbian" with upcoming Gunna and veteran Young Thug right after one another for the full experience.
The album does come with some low points, however. If 21 Savage's "Don't Come Out The House"track goes viral, it is because the song comes off as an internet meme. He whispers for just about a third of the time, something social media users will have a field day with. Second to this displeasure is the 11th track, "Only You." It's no secret that Latin vibes are seeping their way into hip-hop biggest hits. Cardi B's "I Like It", the late XXXTENTACION's "I don't even speak spanish lol" and Bad Bunny's "MIA" assisted by Drake are just some examples of this ew trend gaining some traction. Metro Boomin's attempt to join this hype train is a flop, as Migos rapper Offset is squished into this song when he is not needed.
Overall, the album is not too bad, but nothing to fall dramatically in love with. Am I happy Gucci Mane slid Metro $1 million to come back to the studio? Yes. Do I think this is his best album? Not necessarily, see Without Warning.
